When we want 2 or more cells to combine together or join together, we use the merge cell option.

When we want 1 cell to break or get divided into 2 or more cells, we use split cell option.

Merge cells is the opposite of split cells. In MS Word, the split cell feature allows you to split cells into two or more cells. On the other hand, the merge cell feature allows you to combine two or more cells in the same row or column into a single cell.
