The British pound to successful battles with the nawabs of Bengal .
Battle of Plassey in 1757 and the Battle of Buxar in 1764 which completely brought Bengal under the British control.
Under this system, the administration was divided between the company and the nawab but the whole power was actually concentrated in the hands of the company. This complex system remained in practice during the period from 1765 to 1772. The system was advantages to the British as the British had all the power but no responsibility whereas the nawab had all the responsibility.
