Let the numbers be x and y

x - y = 6 (given in question)---(i)

(x+y)/2 = 8 (as it is arithmetic mean) ==> x+y = 16 ---(ii)

Using the above two linear equations, we can find x & y

adding (i) and (ii);

2x = 22

i.e x = 11

Therefore y = 5

Hence the numbers are 11 and 5
