a²x–ay+12 =0

a²× 1 –a × 7 + 12 =0

a² –7a + 12=0

By splitting the middle term

a²–3a–4a+12=0

a(a–3)–4(a–3) =0

(a–3)(a–4)=0

a–3 =0 or a–4=0

a=3 or a=4
