The fraction of students in the band play either the flute or the clarinet is 7/20

The fraction of students in the band play either the flute or the clarinet is 7/20 GIVEN

In a student band, 1/4 play the flute, and another 1/10 play the clarinet.

TO FIND

Fraction of the students in the band play either the flute or the clarinet.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

It is given,

Fraction of students playing flute = 1/4

Fraction of studenta playing Clarinet = 1/10

Fraction of students playing either flute or clarinet = Fraction of students playing flute + Fraction of studenta playing Clarinet.

Therefore,

Fraction of students playing either flute or clarinet = 1/4 + 1/10

Since both the fractions are unlike fractions we will take the LCM of the denominators, The resultant will be the new denominator.

Therefore,

LCM of 4 and 10 = 20

 =  \frac{5 + 2}{20}  =  \frac{7}{20}

Hence, The fraction of students in the band play either the flute or the clarinet is 7/20
