Solution:

Question is based on percentage and its application. We have the percentage of passed candidates and no. of failed ones. We have to find the total.

Given:

  • Percentage of passed candidates = 92%
  • Number of failed candidates = 400

We have to find the total number of candidates appeared in the examination.

According to given data, No. of failed candidates:

➝ 100% - 92%

➝ 8%

But, 8% of the total are failed candidates whose number is 400. Then let's consider the total no. be x

 \sf{8\% \: of \: x = 400}

This is equals to,

  \sf{\dfrac{8x}{100}  = 400}

We have to find x, So let's isolate x in the LHS by desired transferring of other numbers.

 \sf{x =  \dfrac{400 \times 100}{8} }

 \sf{x = 5000}

Hence, the total number of candidates in the school is \boxed{\sf{5000}} (Answer).....
