Solution

Let , the speed of boat in still water be x

and , speed of stream be y

So ,

The speed of boat along the stream = 11 km/h

so , x + y → 11 km/h --- ( 1 )

and 5 km/h against the stream ,

x - y → 5 km/h --- ( 2 )

Solving both the equations ,

→ x + y + x - y = 11 + 5

→ 2x + y - y = 16

→ 2x = 16

→ x = 8

So , the speed of boat in still water is 8 km/h
