when it is open interval (a,b) the points a and b are not included in the domain, whereas in closed interval [a,b] the points a and b are included.. .. if you are getting confused then try using these notations for open ]a,b[ and for closed [a,b] so you would easily see that a and b are not actually included.. that is just a way to remember.. next time you see ( ) replace it by ] [.. all the very best
