Answer:

1.Indian soldiers refused to cross the seas because those days many people in the country believed that if they crossed the sea they would lose their religion and caste

2.The soldiers felt that it was a move by the British to defame their religion because no Hindu would touch the beef and no Muslim would touch the pork. As a result, the Indian sepoys refused to use greased cartridges.

Answer:

Because of their religious practices (धार्मिक मान्यताएँ).

Explanation:

1. In older times, Hindu people believed that if they travelled overseas, they would lose their religion, caste and their families so they did not want to travel overseas. When a war in Burma ( now called Myanmar) took place, Indian Sepoys were ordered to travel overseas but they didn't. So a law was made that new recruiments (who joined Indian Sepoy service recently) are forced to travel overseas to fight a war.

2. According to Mangal Pandey and many sepoys in Awadh and Bengal Presidency, a rumour was spread that the cartridge of the New Enfield Rifle introduced by the British was greased with Lard (Pork Fat) and Tallow (cow fat). It hurted the sentiments of both Hindu and Muslims as they had to bite to remove the outer layer. So they refused to use these cartridges.

The most interesting fact is that these 2 things are also the causes for the outburst of the famous Revolt of 1857.
