Because the value of gravity on moon is 1/6 times the value on earth. This makes it very difficult for astronauts to walk on moon. This they tie heavy weight so as to increase the gravitational 'Force'.Thus they can walk more conveniently.

Due the small value of gravity on the Moon, compensate for this loss in weight, the travellers load their backs with heavy weight.

The moon is the place of lower gravity than on experienced on Earth. On Earth the weight is original but on the surface of Moon it is less than Earth approx \frac{1}{6} of the original weight is expereinced on the surface of Moon than the Force experienced on the surface of the Earth.

This is due to the lower mass of Moon than the Earth.
