Answer :

Price of a notebook = Rs 35

Price of a pen = Rs 8

Step-by-step explanation :

Let

the cost of each notebook be Rs x

and the cost of each pen = Rs y

  • 4 notebooks and 3 pens cost Rs 164

        4x + 3y = Rs 164 ---[1]

  • 5 notebooks and 4 pens cost Rs 207

        5x + 4y = Rs 207 ---[2]

Multiply the equation [1] by 4,

4(4x + 3y) = 4(Rs 164)

16x + 12y = Rs 656 ---[3]

Multiply the equation [2] by 3,

3(5x + 4y) = 3(Rs 207)

15x + 12y = Rs 621 ---[4]

equation [3] − equation [4]

16x + 12y − (15x + 12y) = Rs (656 - 621)

16x + 12y − 15x − 12y = Rs 35

x = Rs 35

Substitute x = Rs 35 in equation [1]

4x + 3y = Rs 164

4(Rs 35) + 3y = Rs 164

140 + 3y = 164

3y = 164 − 140

3y = 24

y = 24/3

y = Rs 8

a) The two equations are

4x + 3y = Rs 164

5x + 4y = Rs 207

b) Price of a notebook = Rs 35

   Price of a pen = Rs 8
