(a) The narrator Jerome is trying to find his toothbrush.
(b) The narrator’s looking for, and not finding his toothbrush suggests that he is forgetful and also obsessed with certain things like his toothbrush. He is also adamant about locating it and is certainly not good at packing, though he feels the opposite.
(c) He found it inside a boot. It is extremely funny because a toothbrush is meant to be put in a hygienic place, but a shoe is hardly hygienic!
(d) The three friends are going on a boating trip down the river. They are packing everything that they might need during the trip.
