Question:

Sides of a rectangle are in the ratio 14:3. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 170 cms, find the length and breadth.

Given:

  • Sides of a rectangle are in the ratio 14:3.
  • Perimeter of the rectangle is 170cm.

To Find:

  • The length and breadth of Rectangle.

Solution:

Let the sides of Rectangle be \bold{x\: cm} . Therefore,

\sf{l\ratio b=14\ratio 3} . So,

Length= 14x —(1)

and, Breadth= 3x —(2)

We are given that perimeter of Rectangle is 170cm. To find the perimeter of Rectangle. We use the following formula,

\hookrightarrow\mathsf{Perimeter\: of\: Rectangle=2(l+b)}

Substituting all the values in the formula. We get,

\rightarrow\mathsf{Perimeter\: of\: Rectangle=2(l+b)}

\rightarrow\mathsf{170cm=2(14x+3x)}

\rightarrow\mathsf{\large{\frac{170}{2}}=(14x+3x)}

\rightarrow\mathsf{85=14x+3x}

\rightarrow\mathsf{85=17x}

\rightarrow\mathsf{\large{\frac{85}{17}}=x}

\rightarrow\mathsf{x=5}

Substituting value of x in equation (1) and (2). We get,

\sf{Length=14(5)=70}

\sf{Breadth=3(5)=15}

Hence, length and breadth of Rectangle is 70cm & 15cm respectively.
