This is a nice question to test whether or not someone has thought an answer trough before they blurt it out (:

The first thing that popped into my mind was: ‘this is easy, 4×6=24 .

But then I thought, why would they be asking this question? I thought about it a bit and I realised that there is not a distance of 6 meter for every student, but only this distance for every gap between students. Since the amount of gaps is always one less than the amount of students, we are left with 3×6=18 .
