Answer:

Hence, the present age of the son is 13 years.

Option (D) 13 is correct

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

Sum of ages of father and son = 68

After 8 years the age of father will be thrice as old as son.

To find: The present age (in years) of the son.

Solution:

Let the present age of father be x and that of son be y.

x + y = 68 …………. (1)

After 8 years:

age of father = x + 8

age of son = y + 8

A.T.Q:

(x + 8) = 3(y + 8)

x + 8 = 3y + 24

x = 3y + 24 - 8

x = 3y + 16 ………..(2)

Put this value of x  in equation 1:

x + y = 68

3y + 16 + y = 68

4y + 16 = 68

4y = 68 - 16

4y = 52

y = 52/4

y = 13 years

Present age of son = 13 years

Hence, the present age of the son is 13 years.

Option (D) 13 is correct.
