Given :- The consumer price Index for April 1985 was 125. The food price index was 120 an other items index was 135. The percentage of the total weight of the index is

(a) 66.67

(b) 68.28

(c) 90.25

(d) None of these.

Solution :-

Let us assume that, The percentage weight given to food is x .

So,

weight given to food = x %

Than,

weight given to other item = (100 - x)%

Therefore,

→ weight given to food + weight given to other item = consumer price Index .

Putting all values we get,

→ x % of 120 + (100 - x)% of 135 = 125

→ (x * 120/100) + {(100 - x) * 135 / 100} = 125

→ {120x + 135(100 - x)} / 100 = 125

→ 120x + 13500 - 135x = 125 * 100

→ 13500 - 15x = 12500

→ 15x = 13500 - 12500

→ 15x = 1000

dividing both sides by 5

→ 3x = 200

dividing both sides by 3 now,

→ x = 66.67% (Option A) (Ans.)

Hence, The percentage of the total weight of the index is 66.67% .
