The amount of heat H produced in the wire is directly proportional to the square of current I passing through the wire, i.e., H ∝ I².

Resistance of the wire: The amount of heat H produced in the wire is directly proportional to the resistance R of the wire, i.e., H ∝ R.

Time: The amount of heat H produced in the wire is directly proportional to the time t for which current is passed in the wire, i.e., H ∝ t.

Hence the heating effect produced by an electric current, Y through a conductor of resistance, R for a time, z is given by

H = Y²Rz. This equation is called the Joule's equation of electrical heating.
