Answer:

The surprising thing is with the exception of the male peacocks mating display feathers their camouflage is pretty good if they are in their natural habitat.

The reason peacocks have the massive tail feathers is to be able to show the peahens (female peacocks) that they are so fit and healthy they can not only grow energy intensive tail feathers but survive with the penalty of making it more difficult to fly and survive preadators.

The male feathers are a way of saying look I'm able to spare all this energy and still do really well.

There was an experiment done at one of the British safari parks I forget which but a researcher split the peacocks into three groups. Group one had the display feathers cut off and then reattached. Group two had theirs cut off. Group three had theirs cut off and then had them replaced and group twos added to their own reattached feathers. The researchers then monitored what happened. It turns out that group one got around 17% of the reproductive rights, group three got the rest. Group two with the feathers removed didn't get any.

Explanation:

  • Because huge tail feathers require a lot of energy to grow, peacocks have them to demonstrate to peahens (female peacocks) that they are strong and healthy enough to live even when doing so makes flying and surviving predators more difficult.
  • Peahens choose peacocks with huge, vibrant tails, which allows those peacocks to mate more frequently and produce more young.
  • The genes for a long, colourful tail will be passed on from their father to the male peachicks, so they will have a tail similar to that.
  • The problem of endangered species has been caused by widespread hunting for flesh and feathers as well as egg and chick harvesting.
  • Along with habitat degradation in the natural world and human meddling, this also exists.
  • This has led to a catastrophic decline in population across a large portion of the species' territory.
