  • The people of the Sikkim voted to merge with the India in 1975.

  • In the early of 18th century, British sought to establish a trade routes with Tibet, leading Sikkim to fall under the British suzerainty until the independence in 1947.

  • Initially, Sikkim was the independent country,  later it merged with our country India in 1975 after the decisive referendum.

  • Many provisions of Indian constitution had to change to accommodate international treaties & between Sikkim and India.

  • On 5 March 1975,   National Congress repeated for  integration into India, whilst the Chogyal again called for the referendum.

  • On 9 April,  The Indian troops entered country, disarmed that the palace guard by killing one of them & injuring four others & surrounded  palace, putting the king under house-arrest.

  • On 10 April 1975, Sikkim State Council, with  support of the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, that council unanimously voted to abolish monarchy & merge with India in order to obtain the full Indian statehood. The referendum on this issue was set on 14 April.
