Answer:

Given:-

Refractive index of glass = 1.5

Speed of light in air = 3.0 x 108 m/s

We know that,

Refractive index of glass = speed of light in air/speed of light in glass

1.5 = 3 x 108/speed of light in glass

Speed of light in glass = 2 x 108 m/s

Working out:

First of all we should know, What is Refractive index?

  • It is of two types: Absolute RI and Relative RI. Absolute refractive index is the ratio of the speed of light in air/vaccum to the speed of light in other medium. Whereas Relative RI is the ratio of speed between any two media.

In this question, we are given with the absolute refractive index of Glass, the speed of light in glass wrt to air.

Given,

  • Speed of light in air(c) = 3 × 10⁸ m/s
  • Refractive index(n) = 1.5

Mathematically,

 \large{ \boxed{ \sf{ \mu  \: or \: n =  \frac{c}{v} }}}

So, let's solve using the formula:

➝ n = c/v

➝ 1.5 = 3 × 10⁸ / v

➝ v = 3 × 10⁸ / 1.5 m/s

➝ v = 2 × 10⁸ m/s

Thus, the speed of light in glass:

 \large{ \boxed{ \bf{ \purple{v = 2 \times  {10}^{8} m {s}^{ - 1} }}}}

And we are done !!
