Given :-

  • The sum of two numbers is 137.

  • The difference of two numbers is 43.

To find :-

  • The required number = ?

Solution :-

Let the first number be x

and second number be y

Now,

According to the question,

  • x + y = 137 .....................(i)

  • x - y = 43 ......................(ii)

Then,

Adding eq (i) and eq (ii),

(x + y) + (x - y) = 137 + 43

x + x + y - y = 180

2x = 180

x = \rm\cancel\dfrac{180}{2}

x = 90

Putting the value of x in eq (i),

x + y = 137

90 + y = 137

y = 137 - 90

y = 47

Hence,the required number will be 90 and 47.

Related to linear equation in two variables,

An equation of the from ax + by + c = 0 where a,b,c are real numbers a ≠ 0 ,b ≠ 0 is called a linear equation in two variables x and y.
