4. Two carbon
compounds X and Y have the molecular formula C3H6 and C4H10 respectively.which
one of the two is most likely to show addition reaction ? Justify your answer. Also give the
hemical equation to explain the process of addition reaction in this case.

(a) C3H6 will show addition reaction as it is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.

(b) C3H6 reacts with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst to give ethane on adding one molecule of  hydrogen across carbon-carbon bond.

C3H6 + H2 → C3H8

Vegetable oil reacts with hydrogen in presence of Ni as a catalyst to form vegetable ghee which is a  saturated compound.
