It's more improvisational in nature, and includes more of an emphasis on decorations of notes in melodies and ornamentation. Whereas Dhrupad puts a strong emphasis on text and lyrics, Khayalkeeps the actual content of the lyrics as secondary to the way they are used to express the nuances of the raag.

Dhrupad is similar to carnatic music because taal is shown in the hand. khayal is an urdu term for imagination. thumhari is a semi classical composition. romantic themes are taken for this type of composition. lighter raags are taken such as pilu, kafi, or khamaj.
