The various laws enforced by the Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB) are as follows:

1. Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Cess Act, 1977.

2. Air(Prevention and the Control of Pollution) Act, 1981

3. Environment(Protection) Act, 1986 [ includes other rules under this]

4. Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989.

5. Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules, 1989

6. Bio-medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998

7. Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules,2000.

8. Plastics wastes Rules, 1999 and Coastal Regulation Zone Rules, 1991

9. Public Liability Insurance Act,1991

  • CPCB comes under the Ministry of Environment,Forest and Climate Change of India.
  • They were formed in order to enforce the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution)Act, 1974. However, they also have all the additional responsibilities( as mentioned above).
  • It is a statutory corporation which is headquarters in New Delhi with Shiv Das Meena as the Chairperson.
