What is Management?

Management is the process of planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling, done either individually or in a group, with the aim of acheiving a goal.

Is Management a Profession?

To answer that, we should first know the Characteristics of Profession.

Characteristics of Profession:

  1. Entry barrier in form of an exam.
  2. A professional needs to be a part of a professional body like ICAI, ICMR etc.
  3. They need to follow an ethical cōdē of conduct.
  4. Specialized Knowledge is required.
  5. Social Responsibility is top-most aim.

Comparing Management to Profession:

  1. No such entry barrier exists.
  2. Professional bodies like AIMA exist but for someone to be a manager, it is not necessary to be a part of AIMA.
  3. No specified cōdē of conduct.
  4. Specialised Knowledge exists. For example, the principles of Taylor anf Fayol.
  5. Management is Pervasive, ie it exists in all type of non-economic, profit and non-profit organizations, all of which have different primary goals, which may or may not be social responsibility.

Conclusion

Therefore, it can be concluded that as of now, management is a not eactly a profession but is in its way of becoming one.

In all, it is not conisidered as a profession because

  • Not necessary to be a part of professional body.
  • No specified cōdē of conduct.
  • No need for giving an exam to be a manager.
  • Primary goals may or may not be fulfilling social responsibility.
