Answer:

1) In honeybee, sex can be determined by haplodiploid sex determination system. Sex is determined by the number of sets of chromosomes received by an individual. The egg which is fertilized by sperm, becomes diploid and develops into female and unfertilized egg develops into male by parthenogenesis.

Parthenogenesis is explained below :-

  • In some organisms the male doesn't participate in reproduction instead the female gamete itself undergoes development without fertilization to produce it's offspring. This process is known as Parthenogenesis.
  • Some organisms following this method are turkey, honeybees etc.

The haplo-diploid method of sex determination in Honey bee is explained below :-

  • In honeybees, female bee or the queen is formed by fusion of gametes while the male or drone development is from an unfertilized egg.
  • In this case of drones, the number of chromosomes gets halved that is they have 16 while queens have 32 chromosomes.
  • Hence, this case in which both males and females have different set of chromosomes is called haplo-diploid method of sex determination.
