Although more and more girls are now being sent to school as compared to the past, the situation is still far from being ideal. It is primarily in rural areas and in low-income families that the education of girls suffers the most

• Another reason why girls in rural areas are not sent to schools is that they are made to be more involved in household chores which leaves them with little time to attend school.

• Among those girls who do attend school, several drop out early because they are married off at an early age.

• In schools, girls are often encouraged to take up subjects that prepare them for traditional roles instead of subjects such as science and mathematics. Also, little encouragement is given to girls to pursue sports and extra-curricular activities.
