When dilute hydrochloric acid reacts sodium hydrogen carbonate, a
gas comes out with an effervescence:
(a) Write the chemical equation for the above reaction.
(b) What will happen if the evolved gas is passed through lime
water( explain with chemical equation)?
(C) What change will you observe, if excess of this gas is passed
through lime water for a longer duration ( explain with
chemical equation)?

Answer:

(a) NaHCO3 + HCl ⇒ NaCl + CO2 + H2O

(b) If the gas carbon dioxide is passed through lime water it turns it milky.

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 ⇒ CaCO3 + H2O

(C) if carbon dioxide is excessively passed through milky lime water, then after some time the milkiness will disappear as it forms calcium hydrogen carbonate which is soluble in water

CaCO3 + H2O + CO2 ⇒ Ca(HCO3)2
