4. When sulphur is made to react with oxygen it forms a substance 'X'. The substance 'X is then reacted with water which forms 'Y'. Write a word equation for the above mentioned reactions which take place. Identify 'X' and 'Y'. ​

  • Sulphur dioxide reacts with water to give Sulfurous acid

Hence, from the above equations we can conclude that the substance X will be sulphur dioxide and the substance Y will be sulfurous acid.

Sulphur dioxide is presently majorly in the acid rain whereas sulfurous acid is a weakly dibasic acid.
