Concept

The octet rule states that an atom is more stable when its valence electron shells contain eight electrons. This octet could be made up of its own electrons as well as some shared electrons. As a result, until an octet of electrons is formed, an atom continues to make bonds.

Find

We are asked to find the sets of species that does not follow octet rule.

Solution

In AlCl3, Al has 6 electrons in its valence shells but to obey octet rule an atom contains 8 electrons. So Al is an electron deficient species hence it does not obey octet rule.

In BF3, Boron atom is surrounded by 6 electrons hence it does not obey octet rule.

PCl3 also does not follow octet rule.

In SF6, S is surrounded by 12 electrons hence it does not follow octet rule..

Hence AlCl3,BF3,PCl3,SF6 does not follow octet rule.
