In the 18th century when the Dutch gained control over the forests of Java they tried to make the Kalangs work under them to use the timber from the forest. The Kalangs resisted this and attacked the Dutch fort but the uprisingwas suppressed.
They protested against the forest laws made by the Dutch. They lay down on their land when the Dutch came to survey it. Some ofthem refused to cut down the trees for theDutch. Many of them refused to pay taxes and fines.
