direction when a moving bus
brakes to a stop and fall

from rest?

Hey Mate!!

These situations take place due to Newton's First Law of Motion.

Newton's First Law of Motion ;

A body at rest remains at rest or, if in motion, remains in motion at constant velocity unless acted on by a net external force.

This is also known as Inertia.

Inertia means a lack of energy; an inability to move or change.

So, according to the definition, examples of real life applications are understood clearly.

So, example of people travelling in a bus comes under Newton's First Law of Motion.

  1. A person falls forward when the moving bus halts suddenly because of Inertia.
  • Our body will be in motion if we are travelling in a moving bus.
  • Our legs are the contact spot as they are in direct contact with the floor of the bus, which is the reason of our motion along with the bus.
  • When the bus brakes suddenly, we fall forwards due to the sudden change of motion to rest position by the bus. Since our legs are in contact with the bus, they come to rest when the bus does but our upper part of the body continues to be in motion resulting in frontward fall.

Same as the first one, Inertia comes into play to the second example as well.

2. A person fall backwards when the bus suddenly

accelerates from rest because of Inertia.

  • First, our body will be in rest as the bus when it is also in rest.
  • As from the above explanation, our legs are the contact spot with the floor of the bus.
  • When the bus accelerates suddenly, our legs start to move with the bus as they are in contact with it directly. But the upper part of the body falls opposite to the motion of the bus since it is not in direct contact to the bus. So, it continues to be in rest position resulting in backward fall.

Hope this helps you!!

The passengers in a bus tend to fall backward when it starts suddenly due to inertia as the passengers tend to remain in the state of rest while the bus starts to move. When the bus stops suddenly, people fall forward because their inertia as they are in state of motion even when the bus has come to rest.
