There are several reasons. For one thing it is dirty and burning coal causes a smoke that makes the neighborhood stink not to mention the ash that it produces that makes it impossible to get things clean.
Another reason is that it is a major source of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, that is a major cause of global warming.
Still another reason is that it is cheaper to produce energy by solar, water and wind and money would be a major consideration.
Still another reason is that there is a finite source of the stuff and to continue remaining dependent on coal-sourced energy means that we could, indeed would eventually run out of it.
