4. Why do you think the
Matron or the resident doctor
could not guess the speaker
was faking his sickness in the
story 'Homesickness'?
Answers
Answer:
The matron or the resident doctor could not guess that the speaker was feigning his illness because a month ago the on of the speaker's sister had appendicitis. So he observed her very closely. He found out that the speaker's sister had pain in the right-hand side of her tummy, she did not have an appetite and she ran a fever. Since the speaker had observed her sister he could act very accurately. The matron prodded his stomach and he cried when the matron hit the place where he guess the appendicitis was. Since the matron had nurse's training and did not want a ruptured appendicitis on her hands she called the resident doctor. He also prodded around his stomach and took his temperature, since the speaker was pretending, his temperature was normal. The doctor touched the appendicitis spot and the speaker yelped in pain. Like the matron, he felt safer to send the speaker home than to risk an appendicitis operation in the school.
