During spring and summer when there is plenty of sunlight, plants make a lot of chlorophyll. In autumn when it starts to get cold, some plants stop making chlorophyll. As chlorophyll goes away, other pigments start to show their colors. This is why leaves turn yellow or red in fall

Explanation:

The leaves other than green also have chlorophyll. Photosynthesis takes place in these leaves also. But the coloured pigments in them masks the chlorophyll present in them. Leaves have cells in them. The cell may contain chromoplast. which has the coloured pigments like anthocyanin (purple colour) and carotenoid (red/orange/yellow colour).
