Water is recognized as an important resource without which life on earth cannot
exist. Ancient people depended more on agriculture. They realized water is an
essential resource for their existence. They developed various means of storing
monsoon water which they used during the dry months. They used several
techniques for water storage which are mentioned in the ancient texts. Dams are
comparatively modern constructions, even though signs of dams are discovered
in old Harappan civilization. Dams are constructed as barriers across a river or
stream to supply water for irrigation and drinking, as well as for controlling floods.
Dam technology first occurred in Egypt in 2900 BC. A number of dams have been
built in ancient India. They exemplified the merits of early engineering feats. Chola
king Karikalan built a dam on Kaveri river in 1st century AD.
