Answer:

The loss of water in the form of water vapour from aerial parts of plants, like stomata of leaves ,is know as transpiration. Evaporation of water from the leaves to atmosphere results in a decrease in the water potential of epidermal cells. The water which is lost is replaced by the water from xylem vessels in leaves

TRANSPIRATION

Transpiration is the biological process of removal of excess water from the aerial parts of the plants.

It has two main functions : cooling the plant and pumping water and minerals to the leaves for photosynthesis.

There are the following different types of transpiration in plants:

  • Stomatal transpiration
  • Lenticular transpiration
  • Cuticular transpiration

Transpiration plays an important role in the existence of plants. In all higher plants, transpiration functions as an excretory system by eliminating excess water from its tissues through the aerial parts of the plants. Stomatal, Lenticular and Cuticular are three different types of Transpiration.
