4^x - 4^x-1=24
4^x - 4^x-1  =24 
4^x - (4^x/4^1)=24 [Since a^(m - n) = a^m / a^n]
4^x - [1-(1/4)] =24
4^x [3/4)] = 24
4^x = 24 × (4/3) = 32
(2^2)^x = 2^5
2^2x = 2^5

Comparing

2x=5
x=5/2
x=2.5
