Hey!!

4 and x are not like terms .
✒They are unlike terms .

And unlike terms can't be subtracted and added with each other .
Therefore
4 + x = 4 + x

Although may it be possible that in the question the value of x is also given .
If yes, then For eg .

let x be given = 4 in the question

Then the answer will be
4+4 = 8
