Let, the present age of father = x years and the present age of son = years

4 years ago the age of father = (x-4) years

and the age of son = (y-4) years

According to the question....

x+y = 53.....(1)

(x-4) = 4(y-4).....(2)

=> (53-y-4) = 4y-16

=> 49-y = 4y-16

=> 49+16 = 5y

=> 5y = 56

=> y = 13

from equation (1)

=> x+13 = 53

=> x = 40

Thus, the present age of father is 40 years and the present age of son is 13 years.
