40 = 2x + 2x - 8  (multiply 2 to each term)

40 + 8 = 4x           ( 2x +2x = 4x and when -8 goes that side it becomes +8)

48 = 4x            

x = 48/4               ( 4 this side is multiplies so it goes there and becomes divide)

x = 12             (answer)
