Let the total no. of passengers at the starting of the journey be x.

Therefore,

40% of x = 40/100 × x

= 2x/5

Remaining no. of passengers= x-2x/5 =3x/5

Now,

75% of 3x/5 = 75/100 × 3x/5

= 9x/20

So, remaining no. of passengers= 3x/5-9x/20 = 3x/20


A/Q, 3x/20 = 12

=> x = 12×20/3

=> x = 80

Therefore, original number of passengers is 80.
