40/x + 55/y = 13 and 30/x + 44/y = 10. Find the value of x and y?

The answer is x = 5 , y = 11

Do it like this

  • take variables as a reciprocal of another variable, say x = 1/a , y = 1/b
  • you will get the equation as [40a + 55b = 13, 30a + 44b = 10]
  • then cross multiply each other, you would get a = 1/5 , b = 1/11
  • since we took that x = 1/a , b = 1/y
  • therefore x = 5 , y = 11
