40°C is the common temperature where the readings on the Celsius and Fahrenheit scale are the same. Show by calculation.

We know that

C/5=(F-32)/9

let common reading be x on both the scale

then, x/5=(x-32)/9

9x=5x-160

9x-5x=-160

4x=-160

x=-160/40

x= -40

Hence -40 is the common reading on both celcius

scale and fahreheight scale.
