Round off to nearest 10 is discussed here. Rounding can be done for every place-value of number. To round off a number to the nearest tens, we round off to the nearest multiple of ten.
A large number may be rounded off to the nearest 10.
Rules for Rounding off to the Nearest 10:
Rule I. While rounding off to the nearest ten if the digit in the units place is between 0 – 4 i.e., < 5 then the unit digit is replaced by 0.
Rule II. If the digit in the units place is 5 to 9 i.e., > or 5 but < 10, then the units place is replaced by ‘0’ and the tens place increased by 1.
Examples on rounding off to the nearest ten (10):
1. Aaron has 63 marbles rounded 63 to the nearest tens.
Round off to Nearest 10
63 lies between 60 and 70 (multiples of 10)
63 is nearer to 60 than 70
So, we can say Aaron has about 60 marbles.
Similarly let us round the following numbers to the nearest ten.
(i) 43 → 40
We see the digit in the ones place is 3, now round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is smaller than the number. Hence, 43 is nearer to 40 than 50.
(ii) 158 → 160
We see the digit in the ones place is 8, now round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is greater than the number. Hence, 158 is nearer to 160 than 150.
(iii) 3501 → 3500
We see the digit in the ones place is 1, now round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is smaller than the number. Hence, 3501 is nearer to 3500 than 3510.
(iv) 1023 → 1020
We see the digit in the ones place is 3, now round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is smaller than the number. Hence, 1020 is nearer to 1020 than 1030.
(v) 6275985 → 6275990
We see the digit in the ones place is 5, now round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is greater than the number. Hence, 6275985 is nearer to 6275990 than 6275980
