The missing number in the sequence 42 : 56 ::72 :?  is 96

Given:

Sequence is  42 : 56 :: 72 : x

To Find:

The missing number in the sequence

Solution:

By ratio and proportion, a: b :: c: d

\frac{a}{b}=\frac{c}{d} ,comparing this equation in ratio and proportion to that with the sequence given in question,

It becomes \frac{42}{56}=\frac{72}{x},

\begin{array}{l}{\frac{3}{4}=\frac{72}{x}}\\ \\ {x=\frac{72 \times 4}{3}}\\ \\ {x=\frac{288}{3}=96}\end{array}

The ratio becomes \frac{42}{56}=\frac{72}{96},

The missing number in the sequence is 96 and the sequence becomes 42 : 56 ::72 : 96
