Let the total no. of students in the class be x.

The number of girls in the class = 40% of x

The number of boys in the class = 42

So,

(40% of x) + 42 = x

40/100 of x + 42 = x

4/10 of x + 42 = x

2/5 of x + 42 = x

42 = x - 2x/5

42 = 5x/5 - 2x/5

42 = 3x/5

42 × 5 = 3x

210 = 3x

x = 210/3

x = 70

So, total no. of students in the class are 70.
