  • The estimate sum of (466 + 325) is equal to 790 .

To Find :-

  • Estimate the sum :- (466 + 325)

Concept used :- Estimating a sum to the nearest tenth :-

  • if unit digit of the numbers is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 just replace them with zero . { 24 ≈ 20, 43 ≈ 40 }
  • if unit digit of the numbers is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 add 1 to the tenth place value and replace unit digit with zero . { 45 ≈ 50, 59 ≈ 60 }
  • if sum unit digit of both given numbers is less than 5, subtract 10 from the rounded sum .

Solution :-

First find exact sum :-

→ 466 + 325 = 791

Now, rounding the numbers to the nearest tenth :-

466 :-

→ unit digit = 6

since unit digit is 6 , add 1 to the tenth place value of the number and replace unit digit with zero .

→ 6 + 1 = 7

then,

→ 466 ≈ 470

325 :-

→ unit digit = 5

since unit digit is 5 , add 1 to the tenth place value of the number and replace unit digit with zero .

→ 2 + 1 = 3

then,

→ 325 ≈ 330

So,

→ Estimate sum = 470 + 330 = 800

Now, checking sum of unit digits of given number,

→ 6 + 5 = 1

since, sum unit digit of both given numbers is less than 5, subtracting 10 from the rounded sum we get,

→ 800 - 10 = 790 (Ans.)

Hence, the estimate sum of (466 + 325) is equal to 790 .

Note :- 790 is closer to exact sum 791 than 800 .
