p and q are the zeros of the polynomial x²+5x+8

To find:

p+q i.e. Sum of Roots.

Now, sum of roots is calculated by the formula

 \alpha  +  \beta  =  \frac{ - b}{a}

Where, b and a are the coefficients of 5x and 8 in the polynomial.

Therefore

p + q =  \frac{ - 5}{1}

Or,

p + q =  - 5

Thus,

p + q =  - 5
