Seven persons P, Q, R, S T U and V, participate in and finish all the events of a series of
swimming races. There are no ties at the finish of any of the events. V always finishes
somewhere ahead of P. P always finishes somewhere ahead of Q. Either R finishes first and T
finishes last or S finishes first and U or Q finishes last. If in a particular race V finished fifth,
then which one of the following would be true?
(a) S finishes first
(b) S finishes second
(c) T finishes third

(a)  S finishes first .

Given:

  • Seven persons P, Q, R, S T U and V, participants.
  • There are no ties at the finish the race.
  • P is always finishes ahead of Q.
  • R finishes first & T finishes last.
  •  S finishes first & U or Q finishes at last.

To Find:

  • If  V finished fifth particular race, then which of the given options would be true. ?

Solution:

For the question,

  • V is always finish somewhere ahead of the P.
  • P is always finishes somewhere ahead of Q, order of the finishing :

                    = >       V  >  P  >  Q

Either the R finish first & T finish at last or S finish first & U or Q finish last.

Then,

  • Case 01:  R >  _ > _ > _ > _ > _ > T

 or

  • Case 02:  S >  _ > _ > _ > _ > _ > U/Q

If in the particular race V finished fifth & T finished before R.

  • Case 01: R > S/U > S/U > V > P > Q > T - this case is eliminated

  • Case 02.(i) : S > T > R > V > P > Q > U

  • Case 02.(ii) : S > T > R  > V > P > U > Q

We can see that the R can't finish second or the fourth in some case.

So, options 2 & 4 eliminated.

Similarly,

  • T doesn't finish third, Therefore, option 3 gets eliminated.

   *  V is 5th & Q is last but S is 1st to finish the race.

Hence, Option (1) is correct.
